San Andreas(2015)

San Andreas is a 2015 disaster flick, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario and Paul Giamatti.

The film kicks off with Rescue chopper pilot Ray Gaines and his team being interviewed about what they do as a rescue team and then get to show what they do on a daily bases as they have to rescue a young woman who’s car has flipped off a cliff, right from the get go Ray is established as our hero of the film.

We meet Ray’s family his daughter Blake(Daddario) who is getting ready to leave for college, his ex wife Emma(Gugino) and her new boyfriend Daniel(Ioan Gruffudd) while Ray is set on spending quality time with Blake in San Francisco, he gets called into work. Daniel steps in and decides he’ll fly Blake to San Fran himself since he has business there.

Meanwhile two seismologist Dr. Lawrence Haynes(Giamatti) and Dr. Kim Park(Will Yun Lee) are at the Hoover Dam doing research about being able to predict earthquakes when a fault ruptures and in a exciting sequence the Hoover Dam is destroyed. Park being killed in the process.

Haynes back at his office at Cal Tech discovers what happened in Nevada was just the beginning and the worst of it will occur in the San Andreas area of California.

Emma is having lunch in a high rise restaurant with Daniel sister Susan (Kylie Minogue), when she gets a call from Ray, and an earthquake hits causing massive destruction, Susan is killed as the building is destroyed. Emma is saved by Ray who together heard for San Francisco to rescue Blake.
Going into San Andreas I was somewhat on the fence about it since I hadn't really seen a good disaster flick since probably Dante’s Peak, the few in recent years have been more CGI over kill flicks then the throwback to the 70s style of disaster flicks.

San Andreas delivers the goods when it comes to the destruction from the earthquake sequences, Tsunami scene, but also there are a few stand out acting performances as well Dwayne Johnson really does get better with each film and role he takes on and here as Ray he is established as the hero but also the little character moments he shows more range as an actor, two key scenes one where he finally talks about how he carries the loss of he and Emma’s other daughter and a emotional scene near the end of the film as well.

Carla Gugino has always been a quality actress and here she gets to get in on the action along side of Johnson as they race by Copter, Planes,Truck and Boat to rescue their daughter. she has probably the most emotional scene in the movie which I won’t spoil here but she really pulls that off.

Alexandra Daddario is good here, her character in any other film like this would just be a some another needs to be rescued but makes all the mistakes that causes things to happen, Daddario is actually given skills that helps her and two brothers Ben(Hugh Johnstone-Burt) and Ollie(Art Parkinson) survive different moments through out the film. If there was no Dwayne Johnson character her character could have been the main focus of the film as it’s heroine.

Paul Giamatti turns in a good performance as the link to the audience with all the exposition dialogue but he also looks like he’s carrying all of the weight of the disaster on his back too.

Ioan Gruffudd is somewhat wasted as the rich asshole boyfriend, he has a few moments that makes you can’t wait till he gets his which he does but it’s almost like a throwaway moment when it happens.

The movie does have some not so good moments the biggest one being for this being a disaster flick outside of a few none of the main cast are ever in any real danger or even killed off, but the acting, action sequences surely makes up what the film is lacking, This film is why Dwayne Johnson has a lack of screen time in Furious 7 and what you might miss of him there he delivers here but it’s the earthquakes that drop the Rock Bottom but he is the most electrifying dad in movie entertainment( WWE fans will get that reference)

All in all if you are a fan of disaster flicks (or even not so much of a fan of them)that hits all the right notes that need to be hit then San Andreas is the film to see.

Dead Before Dawn (2012)

PLOT

A bunch of college kids accidentally unleash an evil curse that causes people to kill themselves and turn into zombie demons aka Zemons

What do you do when a group of college kids accidentally unleash an truly evil curse that makes people kill themselves and turn them into demon zombies or zemons for short.

Dead Before Dawn takes a very interesting approach to the zombie genre as it brings something fairly new and fresh with the whole demon zombie curse, at first seemed silly but as the film went on it made more sense and actually worked.

I thought it was funny how when the group brought the curse forward they made a mockery of these types of curses in films because the zemon killed you by giving you hickeys and one way to stop them was to french kiss them.

The cast are relatively unknowns with the exceptions of Christoper Lloyd, Mullen used him again in her action thriller 88, here Lloyd is very much playing a version of Doc Brown from Back to The Future and even makes a few references to that film which is fine but he doesn’t get alot of screen time, but looks good as a zemon.

Martha MacIsaac who is best known for her role in Superbad here is very good and likeable, It’s kind of hard not to like her she just has that girl next door likability It factor.

Devon Bostick as the lead I had a few issues with through out the film, seemed to take awhile to get behind his character even though he’s the one as a viewer should be supporting from the word go, but overall he does a good job especially near the end of the film.

The supporting actors all play their roles perfectly and get what the film is all about, most notables being Brandon Jay McLaren who brings the funny one more then a few points and steals the show a few times, April Mullen and Tim Doiron are very good as well, doesn’t hurt that Mullen also directs and Doiron wrote the screenplay.

The team of Mullen and Doiron work very good together and after seeing 88 and now Dead Before Dawn to very different films but both with both films they show that they are good at what they are doing and have fun with it, hopefully bigger things are to come with future projects.

All in all I was very entertained with Dead Before Dawn which reminded me of a few classic horror comedies like The Return of the Living Dead, Evil Dead and Shaun of The Dead to name a few, if you are someone who likes over the top horror comedies then this is a most watch for you.

88 (2014)

"There are two sides to every story"

PLOT

A young woman comes to in a road side diner with no idea where she is or how she got there. Split between two timelines, she gets taken on a violent journey as she seeks out the person responsible for her lovers death.

MY THOUGHTS

When a young woman (Katherine Isabelle) finds herself sitting in a diner with no memory of how she got there, things quickly get out of hand as she struggles to remember who she is and just what exactly is going on.

I hadn’t heard to much about 88 until I saw a few pictures online about it so I decided to check it out, along with Isabelle, Christopher Lloyd co stars in this high energy, high octane, action thriller.
88 does a interesting job of telling two stories about the same person from both point of views of the main character before and after her losing her memory.

Katherine Isabelle is probably one of the most versatile actresses today and her turn as Gwen here proves that there are good leading roles for women, Isabelle is vulnerable, sexy, and ruthless all at the same time through out the film.

Christopher Lloyd gives a a really good against type performance as Cyrus, the leader of a gang who is in love with Gwen and seems to be the root of all of her problems.

Tim Doiron adds some comic relief as Ty aka Gwen’s sidekick with his fast talking and seemingly eagerness to kill people makes for some good dark humor.

I thought Michael Ironside was underused as the Sheriff because its Michael Ironside, he does make the best with what he is given to do.

Director April Mullen does a fine job here with the style and look of the film which helps add to the appeal, Mullen was an unknown to me as a filmmaker but after this one she’s on my radar as an up and coming filmmaker. She always makes an appearance in the film as a interesting but memorable character.

I won’t say to much about the plot because the less that is know is the better because I can’t really say to much without giving a lot away, It is very Memento-ish as we go on this twisted journey to get answers with her certain state of mind.

My biggest problem with the film is that one very important part of the plot is never explained which would leave viewers wondering about this long after the movie is over since its basically the whole point of the story, but if you can get past that and just enjoy it for what the movie is then it shouldn’t take away from it to too much.

So if you enjoy fast pace, action thrillers, with a sexy leading lady then i recommend 88 to you, which is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)

"It's been a long time"

PLOT

65 years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so called moonlight begin again. is it a copycat or something even more sinister? a lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own, may be the key to catching him

MY THOUGHTS

The Town That Dreaded Sundown is a remake(Sort of) to the original film of the same name which was made in 1976 which was based on the true story of the mask killer known only as the phantom that terrorized Texarkana back in 1946.

This film begins with a recap of the real life events that took place in 1946 and then references the 1976 film, then comes to current day where Jami (Addison Timlin) and her boyfriend Corey (Spencer Treat Clark) are at the drive in watching the original film which has become something of a yearly thing for the people of Texarkana who somewhat have embraced the tragic events from years ago.

Jami not being really into horror films wants to leave which Corey has no problem in doing, as they are leaving Reverend Cartwright(Edward Herrmann) is warning everyone about the movie they are watching, he’s something of the prophet of doom.

Jami and Corey ends up at lover’s lane the original phantom’s hunting grounds and while their after 66 years The Phantom appears and forces them out of the car, he tells Corey to get on the ground and for Jami to turn around and not look as he gets down on top of Corey and stabs him repeatedly.

Jami manages to escape and ends up in the hospital and when the rest of the town hears about what happened it causes the town to go into a frenzy and opens up once long forgotten feelings about The Phantom killer.

One thing I enjoyed about this movie was how the filmmakers made homages to the original film a few of the death scenes are play out exactly like a few of the ones in the original, most of note being the trombone scene.

The cast was a little interesting with a few known actors (Anthony Anderson, Gary Cole, Veronica Cartwright, Denis O’Hare,Ed Lauter and Edward Herrmann) showing up threw out, It would’ve been nice to have seen the police play a more important role in this film but they took a backseat this time too the main character.

Anthony Anderson character is based off of the Texas Ranger from the original film played by Ben Johnson and even dressed like him but isn’t given much to do, same with Gary Cole but he does have one of the more memorable scenes in the film.

Denis O’Hare does very well with the limited screen time he gets here as Charles B. Pierce, Jr. the son of the original filmmaker. It would’ve been good to see more of him here since he seemed to be the most committed to his role and what the film was all about.

The lead Addison Timlin as Jami does a decent job as the only survivor of The Phantom attacks and we’re given much of her own backstory but even with all of that there did seem to be something missing, maybe like I mentioned before if the police played more of a role in this film then it would’ve made her seem like a better character some how.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown does a good job of bridging the original with this new film and I was entertained through out, but if there is one big problem that I had with the film would be with the finale, I will not spoil it but the ending felt rushed and weak for the most part and some what slasher film cliched which this film wasn’t for two-thirds of it.

All in all if you are a fan of the original film or even if you are not The Town That Dreaded Sundown is a good watch and more violent then the original, the story is well pace and played out except for the ending but that shouldn’t ruin the overall viewing, it’s one of the better horror films from 2014 and seemed to fly under the radar for a lot of people.

So check it out since it’s streaming currently on netflix as is the original so you could have a double feature and make a night of it.

American Sniper(2014)

"The Most Lethal Sniper In U.S. History

PLOT

Navy Seal Sniper Chris Kyle pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and turns him into a legend. back home to his wife and kids after four tours of duty, however, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind.

Clint Eastwood directs the life story about Navy Seal Sniper Chris Kyle who was herald as the most dangerous sniper in U.S. history. the film is based off of Kyle’s book of the same name.

The film begins with Chris (Bradley Cooper) on a rooftop watching as a convoy is moving through a war torn town and a man sees them, makes a call them leaves, moments later a woman and a boy exit a building carrying a grenade and as both move towards the convey Kyle makes the tough decision and kills both.

American Sniper portray’s Kyle in two ways on one hand he is an American Hero who is praised for what he does and well respected by soldiers who gives him the nickname “Legend” for his actions on the battle field and then he is shown as a man who struggles with living a normal life when he is with his wife Taya (Sienna Miller) or just dealing with day to day living when not in the warzone.

As a fan of war films and movies about snipers, I thought that Eastwood did a very good job of directing the action scenes especially the scenes where Kyle struggles with weather or not to kill the mother and son is done very well with how the tension is built up, I’m sure most people who see the film will look at that differently.

Bradley Cooper does a fine job as Chris Kyle there are a few scenes that Cooper showcases his range and just let’s his facial expresses speak for him which shows his growth as an actor, I will say that the scenes of him during his tours of duty are better then the ones where he’s not. I don’t think Cooper really deserved an Oscar nod for this performance, even though its a good performance but it’s not that good especially when there were a few better that deserved a nod.

I thought Sienna Miller was good but there did seem to be some lack of chemistry between her and Cooper in a few scenes between the two that somewhat took me out of the film, but with that being said she was good with what she was given to do.

I know that the real life Chris Kyle and the film has been at the center of a few controversies a few of them I agree with and a few I don’t, calling the film a propaganda film is some what of a cheap shot when in fact all war movies can be looked at as so, but if you just look at the movie as a movie and not read to too much into it then I think it’s one of the better films dealing with soldiers at war, how it affects them and their families are brought to the attention as well.

All in all is American Sniper a perfect film. No it is not. Does it deserve some of the backlash that it’s been getting. yes and no. is it a film that should be seen. I believe so. so if you do see the movie try to judge it first just off the movie more so then anything first and then worry about the other stuff separate because it’s not the first movie like this and probably will not be the last one like it as well.

A Stoner's Noir: Inherent Vice

"What's Up Doc"

PLOT

In 1970, drug fueled Los Angeles detective Larry "Doc" Sportello investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend

MY THOUGHTS

Inherent Vice is the newest feature film from Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master, There Will Be Blood) that is based on Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel of the same name.

The film takes place in a fictional beach town in 1970 California, this very complex, layer, noir follows Larry “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) who is a private detective, who on one night gets a visit from his ex lover Shasta Fay Hepworth (Katherine Waterston) she explains to him about where she has been and mostly who she has been with, a wealthy real estate developer Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts). she goes into detail about Mickey’s wife and her boyfriend are plotting to get him committed to an insane asylum and asked for her help, but she wants no part of it and wants Doc to stop it from happening.

Now I went into Inherent Vice blindly with no knowledge of the book or Thomas Pynchon and his works, I kind of wish I didn’t do that because even though the film is very well directed, has a star studded cast, a cool soundtrack there seems to be something or a few things lost about this movie.

Inherent Vice at first glance seems to be a redo of The Big Lebowski and I can see where most people could think that to be the case but where that film is fun and has somewhat of a straight forward narration, Inherent Vice seems to gets itself lose in translation of weather it wants to be a quirky comedy or a dramatic film noir which is where my issues with the film come into play.

There are some good performances here most notable being Joaquin Phoenix as Doc who has to be the most clueless private detective of all time except for one scene near the end which shows what he could be like if he wasn’t high 95% of the time.

Owen Wilson is a surprisingly good as Coy Harlingen a sax player who finds himself caught up in everything that’s going on, the scenes between him and Phoenix are some of the best to me atleast, there is a running theme through out about his character that I thought was interesting and the Last Supper shot really drives it him too.

Katherine Waterston as Shasta Fey the femme fatale seemed to be in an another film altogether with her performance which is not a bad thing, I myself not really knowing who she is and having to look her up on IMDB realized I’d seen her in a few other movies but this was the first movie she finally stood out in for me.

Josh Brolin as tough cop “Bigfoot” Bjornsen has a way of playing the a straight lace character and be really funny all at the same time, the back and forth between him and Phoenix characters are funny and strange all at the same time.

The rest of the star studded cast does good jobs in their roles even if alot of them aren’t fully introduced but I was surprised to see Martin Short show up in a strange but oddly funny sequence of the film and it showed him in a whole new light.

I would’ve liked to have seen more from Eric Roberts, Michael K. Williams, Reese Witherspoon, Benerico Del Toro, Maya Rudolph and Michelle Sinclair(she is better known by her other name look her up) all of their characters and performances seemed to garner more screen time then they actually got makes me wonder how much was left out of the movie because their roles are basically glorified cameos.

The movie like I said before is very complex which hurts it for anyone who didn’t read the book first and the run time drags things down as well, there are more then a lot of scenes that go on far to long which may or may not take you out the film a few of them did take me out the film I must admit.

Paul Thomas Anderson who has made lengthy movies in the past, actually think all of his movies are over two hours long. here he seems to make his first misstep with letting scenes go on far two long and letting stuff happen on camera that never really goes anywhere.

This is the first time in a long time that I watched a movie that I was thrilled about seeing but kind of wish I hadn’t seen atleast not on the big screen, I’m not really sure if I dislike the movie or if it just hasn’t clicked with me yet after a first viewing just like There Will Be Blood and The Master did with me, so maybe on a second viewing knowing what exactly I’ll be getting maybe my view point will change but until then I’m on the fence about it.

It does has potential to reach cult status in the future because there are some good things in the film but right now the negatives for me outweight the good things right now, maybe when released on Blu Ray/DVD there is a extended version that gives it more cohesion.

My Top 5 Underrated Actors/Actress

There are a lot of actors and actresses there are really good in films and television that in some ways outshine the A lister or Top billed name that are considered the draw.

Here are 5 people that I believe are some of the top tier in class when it comes to acting but doesn’t fully get the credit they deserve.

It took me awhile to narrow it down to 5 and even then I couldn’t just leave it with 5 had to have a sixth/seventh menn or in this case women and my honorable mention is…

Viola Davis

Davis had been nominated for major awards, and has been in quite a few high profile films, weather she is playing a bit part (Out of Sight), or the mother of a child who maybe being abused(Doubt) Viola always brings it on screen. She has always been a solid actress and stands out wheneven she is on screen.
She can be seen now on the new hit TV series How To Get Away With Murder where she is able to showcase her skills. she is one of the actors who should be showcased a lot more then she has been in the past, and with the success of her new show maybe she will be.

Jennifer Connelly

One of the most vastly underrated actresses of all time, Jennifer first garnered attention for her role in Sergio Leone’s final film Once Upon A Time In America at just 14 she impressed and after watching the film you will remember her, during early in her career she is probably better known for roles in Labyrinth and Phenomena.

As she got older she never really went the main stream route of roles and focused on more smaller mainstream The Rocketeer, Higher Learning, Mulholland Falls and indie films like Inventing The Abbotts where she showcases that she is a top tier talent.

Her most challenging role (imo) is her turn in 2000s Requiem For A Dream the overall movie is grim and depressing, she is one of the highlights in the film and should’ve garnered more attention for it, but it was with 2001's A Beautiful Mind where she finally got the attention that she more then deserved where she won best supporting actress academy award.

Afterwards she followed it up with Ang Lee’s Hulk which isn’t necessarily a bad film it just doesn’t know if its a superhero movie or a drama, the films she did after a few standouts Little Children, Reservation Road are good films but for the most part everything else was very lowbrow for her and she seemed to play more supporting roles like in the star studded romantic comedy He’s Just Not That Into You and the comedy The Dilemma.

It would be nice to see her given more dramatic roles in films that are equal to the caliber of actress that she is.

5. Blair Underwood

He has always be one of those actors that has put on good performances weather as a good guy or bad guy Underwood is always worth a watch, In recent years he’s been known more for guest roles on Sex and The City and Dirty Sexy Money, but one of if not his best acting job has been (for me atleast) his turn in 1995's thriller Just Cause where along side Sean Connery and Laurence Fishburne, its Blair Underwood who steals the show as Bobby Earl, if you have not seen the movie its a must see for sure.

Underwood to me has always been some what a poor man’s Denzel Washington which isn’t a knock against him at all but its saying that if he was more profiled on the big screen like Denzel then he might have had a similar career because he is that versatile as an actor.

4. Rosario Dawson

Dawson has been one of my favorites for a long time now I first saw her In Spike Lee’s He Got Game where she plays Ray Allen’s love interest and is one of the few that I’ve seen go toe to toe with Denzel Washington and come out the other end a strong actor, she has put in alot of really good performances 25th hour, 10 years, Rent,Trance to name a few, the one thing about Rosario is that with all of the really good performances she still hasn’t had that one true stand out performance that fully showcases her as an actress.
Her most recent film Top Five where she co stars with Chris Rock where she is allowed to show her range which is something that I was truly happy to see maybe after this it will lead to that home run role for her.

3. Ben Foster

What can I really say about Ben Foster, he’s one of the most solid actors that I’ve seen in the last 15 years that can lose himself in any role regardless how big or small it is, he’s just one of those guys that people know when they see his face but doesn’t know his name, he’s has held his own opposite some of hollywood big names Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Bruce Willis.

He has gotten critical acclaim for roles in The Messenger where he starred along side Woody Harrelson and also got high praise for his turn in Lone Survivor along side Mark Wahlberg.

pretty sure if you look at his filmography you’ll see more then a few films that he’s starred in that you’ve seen but didn’t know his name but you’ll remember his role.

2. Jeffrey Wright

If you look up the word underrated in the dictionary you’d probably see Jeffrey Wright’s picture. He’s starred along side some of the biggest names in Hollywood Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Samuel L. Jackson, Will Smith, Daniel Craig to name a few.

He has turned in countless award worthy performances but for some reason he is still vastly overlooked, Hollywood insiders and film lover alike appreciate his work and performances weather it be as over the top street wise maniac Peoples Hernandez in the 2000 remake of Shaft, womanizer blues legend Muddy Waters (Cadillac Records) or most recent as Tech Geek BeeTee in The Hunger Games franchise, Wright always brings something fresh to his performances and deserves alot more credit then what he’s gotten.

1.Walton Goggins

Goggins or as I like to refer to him as The Warren Oates of this generation, mostly known for his TV roles FXs The Shield, Justified, Sons of Anarachy, similar to Jeffrey Wright his performances deserves alot more praise then what they have garnered thus far.

I first noticed Walt as Detective Shane Vendrell where he was a scene/episode stealer for alot of the series, even though he should be an unlikable character Goggins made the character one of those bad guys you liked to watch no matter what.

His turn on Justified as Boyd Crowder has been one of my favorite characters on any show in recent and it’s one of the main reasons Justified is worth a watch, but its what he has done on Sons of Anarchy as the Transgender Venus Van Dam  he shows just how good he really is what started out as somewhat of a comic relief character grew into a well rounded and fan favorite on the series(how he didn’t get any guest award nods here I don’t know)

With Sons of Anarchy done and soon Justified will be ending, Goggins hopefully will become a more sought after actor weather its Television and even on the big screen where he seems to be leaning more towards with big supporting role in 2012's Django Unchained and will once again be teaming up with Tarantino in The Hateful Eight.

All the aforementioned actors and actresses are some of the best who I feel deserve more credit then what they have garnered thus far but even if they don’t I’ll continue to support any and every thing that these quality performers do. run
